Week 3: Noah - Obeying the Lord Courageously
Jeff Griffin
Hebrews 11:7
From music stars to sports legends, a Hall of Fame celebrates heroes who inspire greatness. The Bible even has its own Hall of Fame. In our study of Hebrews 11, we’re talking all about how spiritual champions of old inspire our faith today. This week, we’re focused on Noah, who did everything just as God commanded him.
If you were Noah for a day and could only bring one set of animals on the ark, which would you bring? And if you were to only leave one animal behind, what would be left off the ark?
1. Thinking back to early accounts of Noah, what were your initial impressions of Noah’s significance before hearing this message? What struck you from this sermon or after reading Genesis 6:9-22?
“Noah was a righteous man, the only blameless person living on earth at the time, and he walked in close fellowship with God.” (Genesis 6:9, NLT)
2. Jeff made sure to point out that although Noah was commended for obeying God, that is not how we get into Heaven. (See Ephesians 2:8-9.) What’s the difference between having faith and having works? Why does that matter here?
3. By walking closely with God, Noah was able to hear clearly from the Lord, as shown in Hebrews 11. How does God still speak to His people today? How does He connect most with you?
“It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.” (Hebrews 11:7, NLT)
4. Even when it’s hard, God wants us to follow His Word. What are some ways you’ve done that? How did God help guide you through it?
5. Even when it’s undesirable, God seeks our obedience. How does Jesus’ example inspire you?
“…yet not my will, but yours be done.” (Luke 2:42b, NIV)
6. What are some illogical things God has asked you to do in the past? How has He sustained you?
7. Sometimes we might face embarrassing moments in following the Lord. How can we encourage one another to persevere, even when we face persecution or ridicule for our faith?
8. We might have to do things for God that seem costly on this side of Heaven. What advice do you have for a believer who needs some eternal perspective to keep going strong?
Noah’s story is affirmed throughout Scripture, from Genesis to Isaiah to Jesus to Peter. Pray that God will guide you and your group members to obey Him fully, living courageously as Christ’s ambassadors to a dying world all around us.
