Week 1: Loving Others
Jeff Griffin
Matthew 5:43-48
This weekend we kicked off a new series entitled “People Skills.” In this series we will learn much needed relational skills from Jesus. The first skill to be studied is “Loving Others.” Many think they know how to love, but Jesus calls us to a love that is far beyond the typical love seen in our society.
Jeff shared of his love of duct tape! What tool (or product) do you love and use often? Why?
1. Reread John 13:35 (NLT): “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
Why do you think that Jesus chose love to be the defining characteristic of his followers?
2. Reread John 13:34 (NIV): “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”
In what ways is the love of Christ unlike the typical love found in our world?
3. Reread Matthew 5:43 (NLT): “You have heard, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say, love your enemies!”
Why do we find it difficult to love our enemy?
4. Reread Matthew 5:44 (NLT): “Pray for those who mistreat you!”
Why is it difficult to pray for our enemies? What should we pray for them?
5. Reread Matthew 5:45 (NLT): “In that way, you will be acting as children of your Father in heaven.”
Can you think of a time when you experienced God’s kind of love coming your way from someone? If so, tell the group about it.
6. How can you grow in seeing others through God’s eyes?
Spend some time praying for the Lord’s help in loving the specific people that you struggle to love.
