Week 6: God Promises

Jeff Griffin

Psalm 23:6b

Psalm 23 is one of the most beloved chapters in the Bible. In this final week, we see that David concludes with a statement that has brought encouragement to believers for centuries.

Kicking It Off:

Name one feature you would include in your dream house.

Discussion:

1.    When you think of heaven, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

2.    Read Psalm 23:6 – the whole verse. What two time frames do these phrases encompass? Look at Paul’s take on this continuum in Romans 8:38-39. What realities does Paul list as unable to separate us from God’s love? In whom does he say this love is anchored? Why is that fact important?

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39, NIV)

 3.    As Jeff pointed out in his sermon, our experience of God’s love in this life is different from what we will experience in heaven. What is that difference (see 1 Corinthians 13:12 for a reminder)? How does this resonate with your experience?

4.    God’s dwelling with His chosen people has been a theme since the Old Testament, but in Psalm 23:6, who is living with whom?

Jesus as Immanuel ("God with us"), echoes the Old Testament theme. But He also fulfills David’s version in Psalm 23. Read John 14:2-3. Who is Jesus preparing a place for? Where? For what purpose? What does this mean to you personally to know this?

5.    Psalm 23:6 also gets at the tension of the Christian life that is the “Now and Not Yet.” Read 2 Corinthians 5:1-5. How do these verses support what we’ve learned thus far? What does Paul tell us should give us confidence in God’s promises? Does this give you confidence?

6.    Just as Jeff closed with a reading of Psalm 23 in its entirety, read it now aloud as a group.

Wrapping Up:

Take a moment to have your group reflect on Psalm 23 and what stands out to them now that they have studied it all. Pray that God would fix this Psalm in everyone’s memories for His use in your lives.

Lord, I love the house where you live, the place where your glory dwells. (Psalm 26:8, NIV)
